How To Turn An iPhone Into A Dumbphone
1. Use Screen Time Settings
The iPhone’s Screen Time feature allows you to restrict app usage, limit screen time, and control which apps your child can access. Here’s how to use it:
● Step 1: Set Up Screen Time
• Go to Settings on your child’s iPhone.
• Tap Screen Time.
• Tap Turn On Screen Time, then tap Continue and choose This is My Child’s iPhone.
• Create a Screen Time Passcode. This ensures that your child can’t change the settings without your permission.
● Step 2: Limit App Usage
• Go to App Limits in Screen Time.
• Tap Add Limit, then select categories like Social Networking, Games, Entertainment, and others you want to restrict.
• Set the daily time limits for these apps to 0 minutes to effectively block access.
• For apps like Safari, YouTube, and social media apps, you can either block them completely or allow limited access.
● Step 3: Use Downtime
• In the Screen Time menu, tap Downtime.
• Set the downtime schedule to block access to apps during certain hours. For example, you can set it so that the phone only works for calling and texting during school hours or after a certain time at night.
● Step 4: Restrict Content
• Go to Content & Privacy Restrictions under Screen Time.
• Enable Content & Privacy Restrictions and set the passcode.
• In iTunes & App Store Purchases, disable app installations and in-app purchases so your child can’t download or buy new apps.
• Under Allowed Apps, you can turn off apps like Safari, Camera, Siri & Dictation, FaceTime, and others.
• In Content Restrictions, you can set limitations for web content, restricting it to Allowed Websites Only or Limit Adult Websites. You can also block explicit music, movies, TV shows, and books.
● Step 5: Allow Essential Apps Only
• In Always Allowed within Screen Time, choose which apps will be accessible even during Downtime.
• Keep only essential apps like Phone, Messages, and possibly Contacts.
• You can remove unnecessary apps from the home screen (though they will still be stored on the device) by holding down on an app and selecting Remove App.
